Abstract
Recent awareness of environmental impacts have stressed questions of what designers can do to bring visibility, remediate, and/or support natural rhythms. In this talk, I will reflect on different design approaches and attempts to rethink, recreate, use data with such purpose (by looking at embedded and emerging forms of data in the world, exploring more-than-human and under-represented "voices" in data collection, and representing the interconnectedness of different forms of life). I will particularly discuss outcomes of a recent NERC-funded project where we used design methods to combine disparate phenological datasets on the interaction of specific species, resulting in visualisations and speculative designs.
