This course will help to build foundational knowledge in accounting that will help you to better understand financial reporting as well as the ability to interpret accounting data.

This course is suitable for managers who want to gain a broad-based understanding of accounting theory and the practices of accountancy.

What will I learn?

This course will help you become familiar with accountancy tools as well as reporting mechanisms. You will build foundational knowledge in accounting that will help you to better understand financial reporting as well as the ability to interpret accounting data.

Learning outcomes

  • Explain the role and importance of financial statements;

  • Critically evaluate and discuss the financial position, performance and cash flows of a profit-orientated entity using suitable qualitative and quantitative methods;

  • Discuss and explain the limitations of financial statement analysis including the need to incorporate social and environmental factors into investment decisions;

  • Recommend, with appropriate justification, whether or not to invest in a profit-orientated entity;

  • Discuss and apply accounting standards and methods for analysing accounting information;

  • Evaluate the financial position, performance and cash flows of profit-orientated organisations;

  • Demonstrate written and oral communication skills;

  • Demonstrate problem solving skills;

  • Analyse structured information systematically and critically.

How is the module assessed?

Written Assignment 100 5000 words or equivalent

For this course, you should expect to engage in structured learning activities for 10-15 hours per week on average, plus additional time spent on self-directed learning (such as further reading or preparing for assessments).

The course can be completed in a maximum of 17 weeks. Typically, there are 10 weeks of taught content, and the final submission is in week 11. The rest of the time is made up for marking and feedback.

Entry Requirements

While there are no specific academic entry requirements, this course is delivered at Masters level so you’d usually have at least 2:2 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) OR relevant work experience related to the area of study.

Should you not have the relevant background described the University of Exeter cannot be held responsible for any failure to attain an award from this course.

English language requirements

International students need to show they have the required level of English language to study this course.
