About the Exeter Centre for Latin American Studies
Our focus
EXCELAS is an interdisciplinary research centre dedicated to the critical study of Latin America, promoting collaboration across departments and fields of study at the University of Exeter. Comprised of members of staff, postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate research students, EXCELAS is a diverse and wide-reaching academic community positioned within all three Faculties, creating interesting and unique opportunities to share and establish connections in our work, address overarching research themes and explore cultural, historical, political, economic and ecological dynamics in the region. Our expertise embrace Latin America and the Caribbean, frequently establishing connections with North America, Africa, Europe and Asia through the Global Area Studies (GLAS) initiative.
EXCELAS regularly invites and collaborates alongside researchers in Latin America and centres the voices, knowledge systems and experiences of Latin American communities, working to readdress unequal power structures in academic knowledge production.
Our aims
EXCELAS aims to connect researchers working in, on, from and with Latin America across the University of Exeter and create community through regular events that align with our focus. This includes (but is not limited to) collaborations that may lead to interdisciplinary research bids, the sharing of intellectual curiosity and support in teaching, research and public engagement. Through fostering an inclusive academic environment, we seek to support the development of research across all levels, with particular attention and support given to postgraduates and early-career academics.
Many of our members also belong to the Centre for Translating Cultures, Centre for Imperial and Global History, and Centre for Archaeology of the Americas, and EXCELAS and these centres frequently co-host events. In collaboration with the Digital Humanities Lab, we are also looking to curate digital exhibitions, and produce video and audio recordings of future planned events.
EXCELAS members also contribute to Exeter’s Strategy 2030 research themes of: Health and Wellbeing; Climate Emergency and Ecological Crisis and creating Fair, Socially Just and Inclusive Societies and across thematic Exeter Research Networks.
