Our approach
Public and Patient Involvement
The MRC CMM actively collaborates with NIHR infrastructures like PenARC and Exeter BRC to integrate public and patient perspectives into research.
Our Public Engagement and Communications team offers tailored training for researchers and supports public involvement initiatives. We provide opportunities for community, patient groups and our researchers to connect, to shape future research.
Read a case study from a recent project, where a panel of women with lived experience of recurrent vaginal candiasis (thrush) worked with researchers at the MRC CMM to guide the next stage of this exciting project.

Events and Outreach
UK Fungus Day, The British Science Festival and Superbugs Exeter Science festivals (https://thefungalthreat.com/soapbox-science/) creatively bring research to the public through fun, interactive presentations—no slides, no jargon, just engaging stories.
Schools outreach MRC CMM members deliver hands-on workshops and talks, promoting STEM education and inspiring the next generation of scientists. Students explore scientific concepts and connect with researchers. It also allows schools to support research through activities like fundraising or learning about the impact of specific studies.
Through In2ScienceUK We host students from under-represented communities, providing practical experience in science and technology careers.
Inspiring Young Audiences
- We have a growing social media presence with nearly 170k interactions on Twitter in 2023.
- Schools outreach: MRC CMM members deliver interactive workshops and talks at schools, promoting STEM education and inspiring the next generation of scientists. It also allows schools to support research directly, through activities like fundraising or learning about the impact of specific studies.
