Dr Chitzi Ogbumgbada

Lecturer
Law School at Penryn

Chitzi is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Exeter and a member of the Exeter Centre for Environmental Law. His research interests lie at the intersection of international environmental and energy law, with a focus on energy justice, ethics, and the energy transition. His research primarily examines how injustices arising from or worsened by the energy transition can be addressed through the energy justice concept and the law. He is the author of ‘Renewable Energy and International Law: Communitarian Approaches to Energy Justice’, published by Routledge in 2025. He is currently co-editing a monograph on energy justice litigation with Dr Godswill Agbaitoro, which is under contract with Springer.

In 2024, Chitzi was awarded funding by the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS) to investigate the current state of energy justice research and scholarship, and in 2025, he organised a workshop on legal education and the energy transition, which was also funded by the SLS through its ‘Law School and the Climate Crisis’ fund. He is regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences on topics that align with his research interests and often responds to calls for inputs from the United Nations special procedures, in particular, the United Nations Human Rights Special Rapporteur on Climate Change and Human Rights.

Chitzi has a PhD in International Environmental Law from the University of Strathclyde, an LLM in Oil and Gas Law from the University of Aberdeen, and an LLB (Hons) from Rivers State University (formerly Rivers State University of Science and Technology). Before joining Exeter in 2024, he was a law lecturer at the University of Huddersfield and, at various times in the past, a law tutor at the University of Strathclyde, where he completed his PhD, and a visiting fellow at the Institute of Law, Jersey, the Channel Islands. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE) and is admitted to the Nigerian Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
