About this course:

This interactive workshop supports researchers with a practical introduction to developing a competitive fellowship application.

Participants will explore the key sections of a fellowship proposal, understand what funders are looking for, and learn how to build a coherent application narrative that demonstrates research excellence, career development, and future research leadership considering the triple-helix of person, project and place.

Learning outcomes:

As a result of attending this course, you will be able to:.

- Explain the purpose and structure of a fellowship application.

- Identify the key components of a competitive proposal.

- Develop a compelling research and career narrative.

- Recognise common weaknesses in fellowship applications.

- Create an action plan for developing your own application.

Who should attend this course:

- Individuals who have ideally completed the course `Introduction to Fellowships'.

- Researchers preparing or considering a fellowship application.

- Researchers preparing their first fellowship application to funders such as UKRI, NIHR, Wellcome, Leverhulme, the Royal Society or other major funders.

- Researchers seeking to understand what makes a competitive fellowship application.

- Academic staff looking to transition towards greater research independence and leadership.

- Researchers who have an emerging project idea and would like guidance on developing it into a fellowship proposal.

The course is less suited to those in the earlier stages of their fellowship journey, who may wish to first attend the 'Introduction to Fellowships' course.

Those at a later stage of fellowship proposal development may be more suited to 'Fellowship Interviews' training.

Participants will benefit most if they have identified a potential fellowship scheme or have an early-stage research idea they would like to explore.

This session is delivered by Julie Mason.

Julie is a Research Development and Partnerships Manager at the University of Exeter.

She works strategically to support major funding opportunities and build relationships with key funders.

With over a decade of experience supporting fellowship applications across UKRI, NIHR and Wellcome, and a background in professional training, she brings a practical, insight-driven approach to developing competitive proposals.

Before the course:

To get the most from the session, participants are encouraged to:.

- Bring a draft fellowship idea or outline proposal.

- Identify a fellowship scheme of interest.

- Consider your research vision, career goals, and development needs.
