About this course:

This course introduces academic fellowships, covering the UK fellowship landscape, key aspects of fellowship applications, and the support and resources available to help you prepare for future opportunities.

The course will:.

- Review what fellowships are and how they fit in the academic career pathway.

- Consider how you can best plan for and position yourself for future fellowship applications.

- Provide a brief overview of the UK fellowship landscape.

- Review the key concepts of Project, Person and Place in fellowship applications.

- Provide the opportunity to hear directly from a current fellow about their fellowship journey.

- Provide time and support to work through an application development and planning self-assessment questionnaire.

- Introduce the Exeter Fellowship Hub and review the support available through it.

- Signpost to further relevant training and support building from this course.

Learning outcomes:

As a result of attending this course, you will be able to:.

- Understand what fellowships are if they are relevant to your career ambitions.

- If so, then understand how to plan for and position yourself for future fellowship applications.

- Understand the key parts of a typical fellowship application.

- Through completing a self-assessment questionnaire, better understand your own current position and come away with tangible next steps.

Who should attend this course:

Anyone considering a research fellowship application.

The session will focus on early-career fellowships that support the post-PhD transition to research independence.

Fellowships aimed solely at mid-career and/or senior academics, as well as sector transition or visiting fellowships that offer shorter cross-sectoral secondments, will not be considered.

PIs or managers of researchers who want to support their ECRs or revise their knowledge may also like to attend.

Presenter(s):

This session is delivered by Dr Matt Amesbury.

Matt is a Research Development and Partnerships Manager at the University of Exeter, developing and supporting strategic research initiatives and building relationships with key funders.

He has worked in Research Services roles since 2020, supporting multiple fellowship applicants to a range of funders.

Before this, he was a NERC and Leverhulme-funded postdoctoral researcher for 10 years, so brings a rounded view of the research landscape.

Before the course:

Part of the course will be to work through a Fellowship Pathway self-assessment questionnaire, which will encourage participants to reflect on their own situation in light of developing fellowship applications.

No preparation is required but participants should be prepared to engage with the exercise and think critically about their own research and career stage.
