About this course:

This course introduces fellowship interviews, covering presentation and interview preparation, insights from a successful fellow, and opportunities to practise and access further support.

This course will:.

- Examine the key elements of a typical fellowship interview.

- Moving from the general to the specific, examine how to approach both the presentation and interview.

- Provide the opportunity to hear directly from a current fellow who has successfully navigated this process.

- Provide an initial space in which to put the theoretical parts of the course into practice through a `mini-mock' exercise.

- Signpost to other relevant training and support available around mock interview panels through the Research & Innovation Applications and Funding Service.

Learning outcomes:

As a result of attending this course, you will be able to: - Prepare your fellowship interview presentation effectively.

- Prepare for your fellowship interview effectively.

- Review and reflect on an initial opportunity to put these key skills into practice.

- Contact the Research & Innovation Applications and Funding Service for guidance on taking the next steps in your fellowship interview journey - organising mock interview panels.

Who should attend this course:

Anyone who is in the later stages of applying for fellowships, has submitted fellowship applications, or has a confirmed fellowship interview.

The course is less suited to those in the earlier stages of their fellowship journey, who may wish to attend the 'Introduction to Fellowships' or 'Fellowships - a How to Guide' courses.

This session is delivered by Dr Matt Amesbury and Julie Mason.

Matt and Julie are Research Development & Partnership Managers with over a decade of combined experience supporting fellowship applications and supporting fellows through mock interview panels.

Through this experience they have seen the good, the bad and the ugly of interview preparation.

In this course they will attempt to ensure you can avoid the bad and ugly as you begin to prepare for future fellowship interviews.

Before the course:

We will be undertaking a `mini mock' exercise working in groups of three and taking it in turns to be an interviewer, interviewee and observer.

We will review the different roles within the session, before the exercise takes place.

Each `mini-mock' will last 10 minutes (2 minute presentation, 8 minutes questions).

Please come prepared to:.

1 Deliver a one slide/two-minute presentation about your planned or submitted fellowship application.

2 Answer questions focussing on the `Person, Project, Place' aspects of fellowship applications.

The questions will be a selection of those from the list below:.

- Why is this work important and why are you the right person to deliver it? - What makes the research timely - why does it need to be done now? - What is the most significant contribution your research has made to your field and why? - What will be the biggest barrier to the success of your fellowship and how will you overcome it? - How have you developed the research programme independently from your previous/current supervisor or line manager? - What are your long-term career aspirations and how will this fellowship help you achieve them? - What are the main risks in your research programme and how will you mitigate them? - Why is Exeter the right place to carry out this research? - What does the term research culture mean to you and how will you promote a positive and inclusive culture during your fellowship? - How will you embed equality, diversity and inclusion into your research programme? - What will the biggest impact of your research be, both within your field and more broadly?
