Project Management
Projects are new activities taking place within an organisation where the work has a defined start and end point. Project managers play an important role in helping organisations deliver projects on time, within scope, and on budget. Whether launching a new app, rolling out a marketing campaign, implementing a new IT system or overseeing infrastructure upgrades, project managers coordinate people, processes, and resources.
The UK is one of the leading global hubs for project management, with tens of thousands of professionals employed in both the public and private sectors. A 2023 report by the Association for Project Management (APM) valued the UK’s project profession contribution to Gross Domestic Product ((GDP) or in other words, the total amount of money contributed by people in this work to the UK economy) at over £150 billion. Skills shortages remain a challenge, especially in digital transformation, construction, and energy infrastructure, creating strong opportunities for new entrants.
Trends that are shaping the sector include:
- Digital Project Management: Widespread adoption of AI, data analytics, and Agile/Scrum frameworks are reshaping how projects are delivered.
- Sustainability and Net Zero Goals: Project managers are increasingly involved in planning and executing initiatives aligned with the UK’s Net Zero by 2050 strategy, particularly in the transport, housing, and energy sectors.
- Government Investment: Major projects like the NHS Digital Transformation Programme, and green energy infrastructure are creating long-term project roles.
You can consider a career in project management with a degree in any discipline. According to the Association for Project Management ‘’The project profession rewards individuals who are organised, adaptable, and passionate about delivering change’’, as well as a highly competitive salary. (Why choose project management? | APM)
Graduates frequently begin in a junior role such as assistant / junior project managers and employers usually provide opportunities for professional project management training, such as PRINCE2, Agile, APMP or Scrum.
If you are interested in these roles you may wish to check out online resources that explain what project management is such as How to become a project manager, as well as explore typical project management profiles (Bright Network, Prospects). Starting salaries are competitive and salary information is widely available (APM Salary Survey 2025).
