Charities and NGOs

Charities and NGOs encompass a wide array of organisations from local community groups to major international humanitarian agencies, working to address social, environmental, and humanitarian challenges. This area of the sector represents the largest component of the UK's ‘not for profit’ sector.  According to the Charity Commission for England and Wales, the total income of registered charities in 2023/24 reached £96 billion, increasing from £88 billion in the previous year, which translates to most recent estimates to approximately £17.8 billion to the UK economy in 2020/21, representing 0.8% of GDP.

Career opportunities cluster around these core areas which are similar to other sectors in the economy:

  • Service delivery and operational programme delivery: for example, running homeless shelters or delivering educational programmes.
  • Fundraising and development from gathering individual donations, corporate partnerships, grant writing, and working with major donors.
  • Policy and advocacy focusing on campaigning, research, lobbying to influence decision-makers on key issues.
  • Communications and marketing including digital engagement, public relations, and brand management to raise awareness and support.
  • Operations and support functions covering finance, human resources, project management, and governance

It is helpful to have an awareness of the difference between a charity and a social enterprise. A social enterprise operates as a business with the primary goal of achieving its objectives, reinvesting its profits to further these aims. In contrast, a charity relies mainly on donations and grants to fund its activities and is typically governed by trustees who ensure the donations are used solely for charitable purposes.
