English Language Skills Development

Language Courses

Our programme of English language workshops and courses gives students whose second language is English the language skills needed for life and study in the UK.

Whether you want to strengthen your academic writing or feel more confident speaking English in everyday situations, our friendly and inclusive sessions are open to everyone and, where possible, tailored to meet the needs and interests of the group.

You can develop the advanced English language skills you need for your studies here at weekly workshops, or you can learn about academic writing styles, build your confidence for seminar discussions, and practise reading and research strategies. Sessions cover topics such as referencing and citation, organising ideas, and understanding the cultural context of academic English.

We run a range of courses, including subject-specific Academic Language Skills, Language for Dissertations, and Writing up Your PhD Research, with options tailored to undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD students.

You’ll have the opportunity to discuss your ideas, ask questions, and receive feedback in a supportive space.

These weekly workshops are a great way to improve your academic English, meet other students from around the world, and gain support with your studies.

Our workshops can help you build your confidence in everyday English. Whether you're adjusting to life in the UK or simply want to feel more at ease with informal English, these sessions offer space to explore how the English language works beyond your studies.

Sessions are informal and friendly, offering plenty of opportunities for you to ask questions, share experiences, and meet people from across the University whose second language is English.

Examples of workshops that have been run in the past include Language in Use, which focused on grammar, vocabulary, and useful expressions for real-life situations, while News and Views encouraged discussion around current events to help develop fluency and the expression of ideas. They are a great way for you to explore language and culture, build your confidence, and feel more at home in your surroundings.

The University can also offer spouses and partners of students or colleagues the opportunity to get together for conversational English practice. One of our language tutors can give guidance on functional language, useful expressions and answer any questions about life in Cornwall.

The sessions only run if we have enough interest. Please email: languages@fxplus.ac.uk for more information.
