Visitors and overnight guests
It’s great to be able to meet up with friends but there must be no more than 4 visitors or guests in your shared flat or studio room at any one time.
If you’d like to have an overnight guest, please email accommodation-guest@exeter.ac.uk from your University of Exeter email account (so that we can verify who is making the request) with the following information:
- Student name and student number
- Residence – building, block, flat number, and room number
- Arrival date
- Departure date
- Confirmation that guest is over 18

You should give at least 72 hours’ notice and have written permission from the Residence Management Team, who will consider fire and safety implications.
Only one occasional adult (18 years and older) guest at any one time is allowed and that visitor may not stay overnight for more than three consecutive nights. Visitors are not permitted to sleep in any communal areas of the accommodation. The Residence Management Team will withdraw permission for guests if their behaviour is deemed antisocial or unacceptable.
To allow everyone space to adjust to university living, permission will not be given for overnight guests over Welcome Weekend or Welcome Week.
Students should note the conditions in section 2.5 and 4.1 of the Terms and Conditions of Residence.
Visitors and meals in our catered dining halls
Why not bring your guest to experience a mealtime with you in the dining hall? Take a look at the questions below for more information.
Are students allowed to bring their family or friends who are visitors to the dining hall for meals?
Yes, if they are visiting. Your guest may eat with you in the dining room by purchasing a single meal ticket for one-off occasions, but they can't be bought on a regular basis for several days in a row. Guests must be accompanied by a University of Exeter student. Please note that a catered resident cannot 'gift' their own meal to their guest; a single meal ticket would need to be purchased.
Mealcard and meal ticket diners can access the dining hall 60 minutes after catered residents, to allow them priority dining. This only applies if you are eating at the dinner service; you are welcome to join the breakfast and brunch services at any point. You can check the mealtimes here.
Single meal tickets for students and visitors can be purchased directly in the dining room at the time of eating. Students can save by purchasing a meal package through the Eat & Shop Club app.
The non-student rates are applicable to family and friends of the student when visiting for short periods of time. There must be a relationship between the UoE student and the guest; the non-student rate is not designed for use by the general public.
Students of other universities can dine using the student rate, on meal tickets only, as long as they are accompanied by a University of Exeter student. If a UoE student wants to ‘treat’ another university friend to a meal they can, either by using up one of their meals on their own Mealcard or purchasing a single meal ticket. On both occasions the non-UoE student must show their university’s ID card as proof; no other form of ID will be accepted. Please note that a catered resident cannot 'gift' their own meal to their guest; a single meal ticket would need to be purchased.
