The Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) Pathway equips you with practical and ethical AI skills you can use throughout your degree and your future career. You don’t need any prior coding experience - over the course of the pathway, you’ll develop a clear understanding of core AI concepts and their limitations, learn how to translate real-world challenges into appropriate AI applications, and build practical skills in areas such as prompt design and light scripting - preparing you with in-demand skills for an AI-ready workplace.

The pathway is embedded within your main degree subject, so what you learn is directly relevant to you. With modules designed around hands-on learning, you’ll build confidence using AI in labs and projects based on real data from your discipline, supported by portfolio-based assessment. As well as strengthening your digital capabilities, you'll also develop the ability to critically analyse risk, impact and fairness, and gain valuable experience of working collaboratively across disciplines.

Key features:

  • Applied AI fluency – learn how to frame problems, choose appropriate AI tools, and evaluate reliability, bias and risk.
  • Practical, hands-on skills – light scripting and prompt engineering develop confident, real-world AI capability.
  • Responsible and ethical practice – strong grounding in ethics, data protection and governance supports compliant AI use.
  • Enhanced study and productivity skills – AI is used to support research, drafting and feedback while maintaining academic integrity.
  • Accessible learning for all backgrounds – no prior coding experience required, with structured workshops that build your confidence.
  • Future-ready mindset and networks – focus on transferable principles beyond specific tools, plus get exposure to peers across the University, mentors and guest speakers.
