Are you drawn to exploring literature, film, television, theatre and/or media — and how they reflect culture, shape identity, and influence the world around us? This exciting subject strand will offer you a creative and thought-provoking introduction to studying Humanities and Arts subjects at university as you uncover the deeper meanings behind novels, poems, plays, films, tv shows and media. You will explore and interpret texts and genres from a range of periods and locations across the past and present through the lens of English, Film and Television Studies, Drama and Media & Communications.

This subject strand will inspire you to think critically, communicate effectively, find your own voice and engage with literary texts, concepts and theories. You’ll also develop key skills in analysis, communication, collaboration, and research — all essential for success at university and highly valued in a wide range of careers. This strand invites you to explore how literature, film, theatre, and media express individual and collective experiences – the voices of the times – are shaped by wider social, cultural, historical, and political forces. In addition to your subject taster sessions, you will experience our research archives in Special Collections, the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum and the Northcott Theatre, all on the Streatham Campus in Exeter.

Activity locations

6 subject activity sessions will take place on the University of Exeter Streatham campus.

There will be six sessions taught by academic staff from the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, in which you will have the opportunity to engage in taster sessions in English Literature, Creative Writing, Film and Television Studies, Drama, and Media & Communications, in which you will explore texts and mediums from a range of periods and locations across the past and present. Subject to availability, you may also have taster sessions in Classics, Visual Culture and Liberal Arts. 

You will have the chance to tour innovative research and archival facilities such as Special Collections, the Digital Humanities Lab, and The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum, and other exciting facilities such as Exeter Northcott Theatre, all on the Streatham Campus in Exeter.

There are no specific entry requirements for this subject activity strand. 

Please note that if you wish to specifically study English at the University of Exeter, you will need to be studying English Literature or English Literature & Language at A Level or IB or equivalent.

In order to pass the programme, you must attend a minimum of 5 out of 6 subject activity sessions, as well as the Exeter Scholars Student Conference.
