Global Languages, Cultures and Visual Studies (Streatham campus, Exeter)

In this interdisciplinary subject strand, you will explore past and contemporary international cultural issues in areas such as politics, society, identity, visual media, history and literature. You will be taught by academics from our Languages, Culture and Visual Studies department and also from our Arab and Islamic Studies department. You will have the opportunity to take part in taster sessions in languages such as Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, subject to availability*.

You will also find out about our Study/Work Abroad programme, Language Centre and how to combine languages with other subjects, including through Flexible Combined Honours or Liberal Arts. The sessions will be taught in a mixture of lectures, seminars and groups.

*No prior experience or proficiency in any languages is required – you can start a degree in any of our languages from scratch! This subject strand is suitable for both beginners and advanced students and takes place solely on the Streatham campus in Exeter.

Activity Locations

All subject activity sessions will take place on the University of Exeter Streatham campus in Exeter, Devon

Six sessions between January and July taught by academics from the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences faculty in Exeter. The following languages will be covered, subject to staff availability: French, German, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, Portuguese and Italian. The following subjects are likely to be included: History, Art History, Visual Culture, Film, Literature, Comparative Literature and Politics.

Tours of the Language Centre, the Special Collections Archive, the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum and the Digital Humanities Lab will take place. You may also have sessions in Liberal Arts, Turkish, Persian and Philosophy, again, subject to staff availability.

No previous language experience required.

In order to pass the programme, you must attend a minimum of 5 out of 6 subject activity sessions, as well as the Exeter Scholars Student Conference.
