Module description

This module is designed to introduce students to the Turkish language as spoken today in modern Turkey. At the beginning of the course, it is expected that all students will learn the proper pronunciation features of Turkish by recourse to the teacher during class and to course audio materials.

The module aims to introduce different aspects of Turkish at A1 level and aims to develop all four language skills alike as well basic Turkish structures and a selection of survival and significant vocabulary. Translation exercises and study materials are regularly set and later corrected and analysed by the whole class and/or the lecturer.

Module aims - intentions of the module

  • 4. Acquire a basic understanding of the importance of Turkish language and civilisation in the broader context of Islamic civilisation and culture.

Syllabus plan

You will be expected to learn proper pronunciation that may have distinct features by recourse to the teacher during class and classroom audio materials; to express yourself using very basic grammar structures and relevant vocabulary at A1 level. Examples of recorded daily life conversations and narrations are used through which listening and speaking skills are promoted. Translation exercises are regularly given as homework, which is later corrected and analysed by the whole class. You are also often referred to study materials which later given feedback about by the teacher, with some of these texts appearing in the final exam. Simple examples of Turkish literary work will be used for reading and comprehension.
