Module description
Accounting does not exist as an exclusive function in its own right in an organisation, but to support internal users. Managers are an important part of this constituency. All professional accounting bodies require their members to have a working understanding of the profession within the context of management decision-making and organisational management. Therefore, accounting students must have a broad understanding of the role of managers, management theories, organisation culture and structure, group formation, business strategy, and the issues facing important functional areas of a business. The need for accountants to possess strong communication skills has also been identified from within the profession and by employers.
This module is designed to provide students on BSc Accounting and Finance and BSc Accounting and Business programmes with a theoretical appreciation for, and active application of, some of the common management thoughts and practices used within organisations, and the historical and current contexts in which they exist.
Module aims - intentions of the module
Both the knowledge and skills introduced in this module provide a foundation for further exploration, development, and success in study and assessment throughout the undergraduate accounting programmes and into professional employment. Throughout study and assessment there are opportunities to understand and apply module knowledge, and build confidence in developing and using oral and written communications skills that are desired by employers and professional accounting bodies.
