Law with International Study: Year Abroad

Module description

This module will permit you to study Law in a different jurisdiction at one of our non-European partner institutions in Australia, Canada or USA as a compulsory element of the LLB with International Study Programme. It significantly increases and deepens your choice of optional subjects available by permitting you to take optional law and law-related modules not available here at Exeter. It gives you access to modules taught in a different learning culture, develops your comparative law skills (both through studying law of a different jurisdiction and through your year abroad dissertation plan), broadening your overall experience of learning. The aim of the 'reflective log' element of the module is to focus your awareness on the impact of studying abroad, comparing expectations with realities and developing a critical awareness of the cultural and intellectual differences involved. You will be enabled to reflect on the problems posed by different study and examination conditions and by the challenges of everyday life in an unfamiliar social and economic environment.

Syllabus plan

Placements for this module will be secured by Law and the University Study Abroad co-ordinator. You will be provided with suitable preparatory materials and appropriate guidance during the final term of your second year. You will join your host University direct without returning to Exeter at the start of your third year and will re-join your Exeter degree programme at the start of your fourth year. Whilst abroad you will follow the syllabuses as provided by the host University.

Following selection onto the LLB with International Study Programme in your second year, you will be required to submit applications for your selected universities and to ensure that all necessary paperwork is completed in due time, and to attend preparatory meetings. You will be provided with contact details for both the host institution and for Exeter University. You will be asked to maintain regular contact with the Law Study Abroad Co-ordinator at Exeter, who will approve your programme of studies at the host institution. You will be provided with suitable preparatory materials and appropriate guidance during the final term of your second year. Learning and teaching methods for the modules taken at the host university will be determined by that university. You must liaise with your potential final year comparative law dissertation supervisor (see LAW3047A) during their year abroad and keep the Study Abroad Co-ordinator informed of your dissertation plan progress in their final term abroad.

Rules and regulations for re-assessment of the year abroad fall under the legislation of the partner institution. Should the student fail his/her year abroad then s/he would normally revert to the three year degree.
