Module description

From the end of the Civil War in 1939 until Franco's death in 1975 Spain was in the grip of dictatorship. This module will explore selected works by Spanish authors who subtly represented and exposed the political, social and economic realities of the post-war period and beyond. We will look at how these symbolic narratives convey indirect expression of opposition during the early years of the regime when censorship was strictly imposed. We will also consider representations of the male and female psyche as reflections of a disturbed and damaged nation in which social relationships have been disrupted by violence and war.

Module aims - intentions of the module

The module explores the ways in which Spanish fiction following the CivilWar responded to social, political and cultural contexts. The development of the Spanish novel from the 1940s to the 1960s will be traced, with particular attention given to literary trends such as tremendismo, Objectivism, Social Realism, and the New Novel. Students will examine the extent to which the literary texts of the period resist dominant ideologies, as well as socio-political factors that influenced the fiction produced in Franco's Spain.
