Module description
In the course of this module you will study three texts from the early nineteenth century to the mid twentieth century. Through close reading and detailed analysis of these texts you shall think about the rights and wrongs of capital punishment, the power of mob psychology, the interaction between society and the individual and the ways in which criminals come into being.
Module aims - intentions of the module
By the end of the course you should have honed skills in the areas of close reading, textual analysis and cogent criticism. You should have developed further your capacity to engage effectively with secondary material. You should also have an appreciation of interdisciplinarity since, as well as evaluating the enduring legacy of the chosen primary texts upon the world in which we live, we shall also turn to the field of psychiatry in our efforts to understand the criminal and how s/he came into being.
