Module description

This module provides you with an opportunity to develop your employability skills and potential so that you may more effectively prepare for entering the job market. Through a series of industry-facing guest lectures from practicing media and communications sector professionals, you will be guided through possible career paths and learn to identify employers’ needs in a changing job market. You will also have the opportunity to network with the guest speakers, further developing your interpersonal communication and networking skills, maximising your employability potential. There are no pre-requisites or co-requisites for this module, and no specialist knowledge, skills, or experience are required to take it. This module is recommended for interdisciplinary pathways.

Module aims - intentions of the module

This module aims to:
 
• Prepare you to join the workforce by developing your employability and career prospects.
• Provide you with the opportunity to reflect on your career goals and plan for your future career.
• Offer you a range of industry perspectives from guest speakers from the media and communications sector.
• Equip you with a working understanding of the day-to-day realities of different media and communications jobs via industry speakers.
• Provide you with opportunities to engage with the University’s Career Zone and familiarise yourself with the services and support they can offer.
• Enable you to deepen your understanding of the media and communications sector and organisations relevant to your own potential career trajectory.

Syllabus plan

The content will vary from year to year depending on the guest speakers that are available, but it is envisaged that the module will cover some or all of the following topics:
 
• Career paths in the media and communications sector
• Challenges facing the sector 
• The impact of digital technologies and AI on the workplace
• Networking opportunities
• Key employers and organisations in the media and communications sector

Re-assessment notes

Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 50%) you will be required to submit a further assessment as necessary. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 50%.
