Module description

In this module you will receive practical training via two school placements on how to teach your subject in the secondary 11-16 age range.  Throughout the year you will collect evidence in an Individual Development Portfolio (IDP) which will be assessed against the Teachers’ Standards at the end of the year.  This module will be taken alongside the Secondary Subject Knowledge, Pedagogy, Research and Practice module and the Education Theory, Research and Practice module. Successful completion of all three modules leads to the award of Secondary PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status.

Module aims - intentions of the module

The aim of the module is to enable students to provide reflection on their professional development and demonstrate evidence of achievement of the range of essential knowledge, skills and experience listed in the Teachers’ Standards required for QTS. These are available at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/teachers-standards

It includes dedicated time spent in school settings as part of 20 days of Intensive Training and Practice (ITAP) where trainees focus on particular aspects of teaching, gain immediate and targeted feedback focused on improvement and access appropriate expert support.

Re-assessment notes

At the end of the course, if a submitted portfolio is deemed to be a Fail, you will be given feedback outlining what needs to be done to bring the portfolio to a pass standard and one opportunity for resubmission via a 10 week re-sit placement may be allowed, if this is agreed by the Faculty Level Assessment, Progression and Awarding Committee.

If you go on to pass the re-sit placement and therefore the Professional Learning in Schools module, and have passed all other modules, you can then be awarded the PGCE with QTS.

If you fail the re-sit placement and therefore the Professional Learning in Schools module but have passed both the Subject Knowledge, Pedagogy, Research and Practice and the Education Theory, Research and Practice modules, you can leave the programme with a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Professional Studies in Education which does not confer QTS status.
