This module aims to give you an awareness of the ‘external’ factors that will affect your engineering project, from the client requirements, to available finance, to the imposed deadlines. In better understanding the other project ‘players’ and the constraints that they face, you will be well placed as an engineer to assist in delivering a project that achieves the business case. This broad knowledge will help you to produce a design that not only achieves the mathematical and physical challenges, but also meets the aesthetic, budgetary and programme criteria.
- Lectures on design team members such as the project manager, cost consultant, architect and contractor
- Lectures on contracts, liability, and other legal aspects
- Lectures on project management
- Lectures on construction regulations and health & safety considerations
- Lectures on health and safety; hazards, impact, likelihood, risk assessment, mitigation
- Lectures on environmental impact, sustainability, embodied energy, and low carbon construction
- Case studies of engineering projects, concentrating on the legal aspects, design team interaction, project management and environmental considerations
