Module description

Intellectual Property and Biotechnology provides you with the opportunity to gain detailed knowledge of how intellectual property can nurture, protect and monetise inventions in the biotechnology sphere, including biopharmeceuticals (such as the use of living cells and enzymes), biohealthcare (such as gene therapy, RNA therapy, and vaccines), and agricultural biotechnology (such as genetic modification of crops). In this module, you will encounter not only law, but also the ethical and social questions raised by the use of such technologies, as well as their patentability. Should vaccines be subject to global IP protection if half of the world could not afford them? Should IP law be modified in the face of biotechnologies that could irreversibly destroy ecosystems or species? This module will examine a number of case studies invoking these and other questions.
