Module description

ELC1801 provides a practical and theoretical introduction to TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and ways in which a teacher can engage learners and facilitate learning.  You will examine language and skills from a learner’s perspective and explore aspects such as establishing a positive classroom climate and implementing classroom management techniques.  The seminars include ‘hands-on’ practice, enabling you to develop confidence in your ability to plan and deliver well-staged purposeful lessons.  This module does not provide a teaching qualification but allows you to gain valuable experience if considering teaching or working as a teaching assistant in the future.

Module aims - intentions of the module

The module aims to equip you with:

  • The knowledge and skills to bring course book materials to life and engage learners through, for example, use of personalisation or visual aids
  • Techniques for developing a confident classroom presence, giving clear instructions, and maximising student talking time
  • Awareness of skills and strategies to foster in learners
  • The ability to write purposeful lesson plans and teaching materials

awareness of lexis and phonology and techniques to highlight and concept check language in context

Using basic concepts and terminology of communicative language teaching

Highlighting vocabulary in the classroom: identifying features of lexis, selecting key items, integrating lexis into a lesson and concept checking

Developing classroom presence and classroom management techniques

Establishing aims and intended learning outcomes; structuring a purposeful lesson and writing a detailed lesson plan

Giving instructions and modifying language

Highlighting phonology: transcribing in and out of phonemic script; making word stress

Adapting and supplementing course book materials to structure an integrated skills lesson around a reading text

Justifying a lesson plan
