Module description

The global, multifaceted histories of psychedelic use will be explored here, together with a critical eye on the function of historicizing. We look at the psychedelic use of indigenous peoples of the Americas, Asia, and elsewhere, in addition to ‘Western’ histories of psychedelic use – and how they may encounter one another. In relation to evolutionary theories concerning encultured brain and sociality, we explore the phenomena of festivals, raves, holding space, as well as the changing perceived purposes of psychedelics (political, therapeutic, militaristic, religious, poetic, etc.).
