Module description

This module is designed to introduce you to a range of management concepts and apply these to analyse and interpret and apply knowledge to real world business examples.

Management is dynamic, continuously adapting to changes in the external environment.  We will be considering management in context of its origins, current practice and theories and anticipating its future direction.

Although you may not be planning to continue your studies in management in the future, it is likely, whichever path you choose, you will take on management responsibilities in your future career. We are all ‘managers’ and this will provide you with an opportunity to develop skills and confidence.

This module provides you with a theoretical framework but also aims to encourage you to reflect on and develop your personal skills and analyse management experiences.

Syllabus plan

Management concept themes:

Managing in context – an awareness of how we have arrived at current management practice and raise awareness of current trends

Managing and motivating people – as the most important organisational ‘resource’ we explore current approaches in human resource management and explore motivation

Managing operations and quality – we consider technological advances in operations management and how to ensure quality at every stage

Managing and leading change – with the pace of change increasing in the business world, we explore approaches leadership approaches and discuss whether there is one right way to lead

Understanding the customer and developing a marketing strategy – marketing is based around the customer and responding to and anticipating their wants and needs.  We are all aware of marketing in our day-to-day lives. We consider ways to define our customer and how to develop a marketing strategy in an increasingly competitive environment.

Decision making in practice – managers make decisions, we will apply a range of decision-making techniques to provide a basic ‘tool kit’ including quantitative and qualitative techniques.

Interpreting financial information

Managing ethically and sustainably – with increasing awareness of business practice, and the increased visibility of the need for businesses to demonstrate success in people, planet and profit, we investigate how ethical and sustainable businesses really are in practice.

Re-assessment notes

Deferral – if you miss an assessment for reasons judged legitimate by the Mitigation Committee, the applicable assessment will normally be deferred. See ‘Details of reassessment’ for the form that assessment usually takes. When deferral occurs there is ordinarily no change to the overall weighting of that assessment.

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to take a referral exam. Only your performance in this exam will count towards your final module grade. A grade of 40% will be awarded if the examination is passed. Referral exams assess all ILOs (e.g. skills and knowledge assessed) on the module.
