Module description
The module is for inbound exchange students or international students working towards a C1 level of proficiency or above in Portuguese and English. You will practice translating a range of text types from Portuguese to English and from English to Portuguese.
You will be taught alongside students of MLP3111, Advanced Portuguese Language Skills.
Module aims - intentions of the module
The module aims to:
- enhance and develop further skills in the translation of the variety of texts from and into Portuguese
- revise grammatical structures and to expand the range of expression including idiomatic usage
- introduce how to explain and justify translation decisions in a commentary
- develop transferrable skills in research, critical thinking and communication

Syllabus plan
Whilst the content may vary from year to year, it is envisioned that it will cover some or all of the following topics:
- Practice of translation to and from Portuguese
- Weekly in-class discussion of translation decisions and strategies.
- Revision of specific grammatical points emerging from the source texts e.g. use of prepositions, subordinate clauses and complex structures.

Re-assessment notes
Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.
Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to submit a further assessment as necessary. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 40%.
