Module description
This module offers an in-depth exploration of key issues and debates in contemporary criminal justice. You will critically examine how justice is delivered through processes of prosecution, sentencing, and punishment, and consider the roles and responsibilities of key criminal justice agencies. You will evaluate the main forms of criminal justice that have developed in contemporary societies, exploring how these may reinforce or reproduce social inequalities. The module also introduces you to alternative responses to crime and harm, such as restorative and procedural justice, and examines proposals for reform. By engaging with current controversies and scholarship on the topic, you will develop a deeper understanding of the challenges facing modern criminal justice systems and the possibilities for improving how justice is pursued and achieved.
