Module description
Human Rights, Security and Conflict is an exciting module which look at the often-troubled relationship between human rights promotion on the one hand, and the role of the state – and other actors – to achieve security and military effectiveness on the other. Often conflict is seen as achieving a political goal to secure the emancipation of individuals and groups, in the name of their ’human rights,‘ or for reasons of peace and security. But as we will see, this is often done by stretching the definition of human rights to achieve state-based goals, which might actually undermine the attainment of the emancipatory promise of human rights protection. In this module, you will look at a number of case studies where the very idea and status of human rights has been challenged by the demands of security, the requirements of military action, or the realpolitik of domestic and international conflict.
