2. Description of the Programme
The MSc Finance and Management (January start) provides a comprehensive foundation in finance as well as the management functions within an organisation. It is an ideal qualification for anyone wanting to start or enhance their career in the finance function of an organisation or to move into management. It would be valuable for those considering working in small business where the ability to control finances is essential, within the finance function of large business organisations, as well in public sector organisations.
The modules in the first semester provide you with a foundation in financial management, corporate finance, as well as an introduction to the main ideas and functions of management and HRM as well as having three optional modules. In the second semester you will study accounting, corporate governance, strategic innovation management and service design. In addition, intensive computer training covering Thomson Reuters Datastream and other financial database software systems, is incorporated into relevant modules. You can select either a finance or management dissertation. The programme offers a choice of a range of options in both finance and management; it is possible to tailor this programme to match your career goals.
The programme also offers you an opportunity to specialise in ‘Sustainable Finance’ pathway in response to the growing importance of sustainable practices and the evolving demands of the finance industry. Building on the core knowledge and skills developed in their programme, you will learn to apply academic learning to real-world sustainability challenges. You will be introduced to ethical issues and dilemmas in financial decision-making and encouraged to consider the social, economic and environmental implications of your professional behaviours and decisions. You will understand the key factors that underpin the science of climate change, and the ways in which the finance sector can support the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy.
