2. Description of the Programme

The BA (Hons) Global Cultural Studies (3-year) programme is not available for direct application. Subject to the agreement of the relevant Director of Education, it is possible to transfer onto this 3-year BA Global Cultural Studies programme.

Global Cultural Studies is an exit programme, which you can switch to after completing one or two years of the Modern Languages course. If you switch into the programme for second year, you will take only optional cultural modules from across LCVS (no core language modules) in second year. If you pass 60 credits of language modules over years 1 and 2 and then switch to Global Cultural Studies for your third year, this will be recognised in your degree title (see Programme Specific Award Rules).

3. Educational Aims of the Programme

Please see the programme specifications for BA Modern Languages (3 year) for full details. The difference between programmes is that you do not take core language modules once you change to BA Global Cultural Studies (3 year) and so do not develop your language skills to the same extent.

4. Programme Structure

The BA (Hons) Global Cultural Studies (3-year) is a 3-year full-time programme of study at Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) level 6 (as confirmed against the FHEQ). The programme may also be taken part-time in up to six years. This programme is divided into three stages. Each stage is normally equivalent to an academic year.

 

You begin on BA Modern Languages and change to BA Global Cultural Studies (three year) in the following cases:

You are studying only one language and you fail that language at first or second year.

You are studying more than one language and you fail all your languages at first or second year.

You are studying only a beginners language and you do not do a year abroad, so transfer at the end of second year.

You decide you no longer want to study any core language modules after first or second year.

5. Programme Modules

You may take optional modules with the agreement of the relevant Director of Education and/or Head of Discipline, as long as any prerequisites have been satisfied, where the timetable allows and if you have not already taken the module in question or an equivalent module. You may switch to Global Cultural Studies after studying one or two years of BA Modern Languages. When you switch to Global Cultural Studies, you will no longer take core language modules, and instead take 60 credits of options per year.

 

You may take elective modules up to 30 credits outside of the programme at any stage of the programme with the agreement of the relevant Director of Education and/or Head of Discipline, as long as any prerequisites have been satisfied, where the timetable allows and if you have not already taken the module in question or an equivalent module.

1. Identify and evaluate the variety of approaches taken within the study of global cultures.
2. Show detailed knowledge of aspects of the culture, broadly understood, of the parts of the world where your chosen language/s is/are spoken, and evaluate them critically, using appropriate methodologies.
3. Analyse and interpret texts (including non-literary texts and other media, e.g. film) in relation to their cultural, historical and generic contexts, and articulate your understanding orally and in writing.

ILOs 1-3: The stage 1 (NQF level 4) culture modules give you a foundation knowledge on which to base your choice of options at higher levels, enabling you to explore and develop your interest in particular areas of global cultures.

Knowledge of the relevant aspects of global cultures is acquired through lectures and seminars, guided reading of primary and secondary texts (including those in non-printed media, e.g. film), and directed independent study. You learn to use the critical methodologies appropriate to the options chosen (literary criticism, linguistic or philological study, political or social history, film studies, etc) through writing essays, preparing seminar presentations and other forms of assessment, following initial guidance from lecturers, and through feedback on work submitted.

ILOs 1-3 are assessed by a combination of presentations, essays, portfolios, creative pieces and other tasks during the module and January/Spring written examinations.

4. Examine critically any form of discourse arising from the close reading and analysis of texts.
5. Demonstrate understanding of generic conventions and the shaping effects upon communication of circumstances, authorship, textual production and intended audience.
6. Show understanding of the variety of approaches to research in the field of global cultural studies and related studies, and of the reasons why such approaches may change.
7. Demonstrate receptiveness to foreign cultures and ability to see the relativity of one's own cultural perspective.

ILOs 4-7 are developed through lectures and seminars in optional modules, with progression from a relatively high level of input from lecturers at stage 1, to greater student autonomy at later stages. Modules at stage 3 (RQF level 6) (and to a limited extent also at stage 2 (RQF level 5)) are related to the research specialism of the staff teaching the module, giving you an insight into relevant research issues.

ILO 7 is implicit in all study of the cultures of another country, and all modules challenge you to reflect critically on your receptiveness to foreign cultures.

4-7 are assessed by coursework and examinations, as described under A above.

ILOs 8 and 12 are essential elements in all academic study, and are developed by teaching strategies which require progressively more initiative from you as you progress through the programme, at each stage building on the skills which you have acquired at earlier stages. Typically, stage 1 (RQF level 4) modules are largely lecture-based while those at the final stage are based predominantly on seminar-style teaching. ILO 13 is similarly developed throughout the programme.

ILO 9, oral communication and interpersonal skills are developed in seminars, in both giving and responding to presentations. Skills of written communication are developed in essays and other exercises such as book reviews and (if chosen) a dissertation.

ILOs 10-11 and 15 are organisational skills which are developed through the experience of preparing essays, presentations and other coursework. Modern Languages and Cultures has a standard feedback sheet which provides for evaluation and comment on these skills, along with other aspects of the work.

ILO 16 is developed through word-processing essays, using websites for research and completing forms of coursework such as blog posts or podcasts . Guidance on responsible use of the internet is given in the Undergraduate Student Handbook and is reinforced in feedback given on essays.

ILOs 8 and 12 are skills which underpin successful performance in virtually all academic assessments, whether written or oral, seen or unseen.

ILO 9, 10 and 15 are assessed by oral presentations, written exams, essays and other forms of coursework.

ILO 11 is assessed by the requirement to meet deadlines and observe word lengths or time limits in submitting work for assessment, with penalties if these are not met.

ILO 13 is assessed though the increasingly independent coursework undertaken by you as you progress through the programme.

ILO 14 Group presentations are assessed in some optional modules; in those where team-working skills are not explicitly assessed, these skills nonetheless contribute to the successful outcome of oral and written presentations.

ILO 16 is reflected in the marks awarded for presentation in coursework.

7. Programme Regulations

Your degree classification will be calculated from the credit-weighted average marks for stages 2 and 3 combined in the ratio 1:2 respectively.

 

Your degree title will be ‘BA Global Cultural Studies (3 year)’. If you have passed at least 60 credits of a language in stages 1 and 2, you will get ‘with proficiency in [language]’. If you have passed at least 60 credits of a language at advanced level (MLx1001, MLx2001 or Language Centre equivalents), you will get ‘with proficiency in advanced [language]’.

8. College Support for Students and Students' Learning

As a student of Modern Languages and Cultures you will have an academic tutor for your entire programme of study who will be available at advertised ‘office hours’. There are induction sessions to orientate you at the start of your programme.  An academic tutoring system will operate with regular communication throughout the programme. Academic support will be also be provided by module leaders. You can also make an appointment to see individual teaching staff.

The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum houses one of Britain’s largest public collections of books, prints, artefacts and ephemera relating to the history and prehistory of cinema. At the heart of the Centre is the Bill Douglas and Peter Jewell Collection, comprised of approximately 50,000 items.
