School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) is a practical, hands-on route into teaching where graduates complete their training within a school environment, learning alongside experienced classroom teachers.

We work in partnership with School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) providers to deliver a high-quality Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) alongside Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Our SCITT PGCE offers a rigorous, academic programme, inspired by research, that complements school-based training. It enables providers to enhance their offer while students gain a prestigious University of Exeter award.

What is the SCITT PGCE?

The SCITT PGCE is a one-year, full-time programme delivered collaboratively between the University of Exeter and partner SCITT providers.

  • We deliver the PGCE academic component (60 Masters-level credits)
  • Our SCITT partner delivers QTS training and school-based experience

This integrated model enables trainees to:

  • Develop expertise in classroom practice within your school partnership
  • Engage critically with educational research and theory
  • Connect academic learning with real-world teaching experience The programme is designed to develop critically reflective, effective teachers who can evaluate and apply research to their professional practice.

Course structure

The SCITT PGCE is structured to complement the SCITT training year and is studied over approximately 38 weeks alongside QTS provision. This is designed to be easily manageable alongside a trainee's increasing teaching workload across the year.

  • Duration: 1 year full-time
  • Level: RQF Level 7 (Masters level)
  • Credits: 60 credits

Trainees complete two compulsory 30-credit modules:

  • Professional Studies in Education
  • Subject and Curriculum Studies
  • Primarily online, asynchronous learning to enable students to study in their own time and at their own pace
  • Introductory in person or online live session at the start of each module
  • Supported by:
    • Lectures and keynote sessions
    • Tutorials and academic supervision
    • Guided independent study via our virtual learning environment

This flexible, asynchronous learning around a core, sequenced structure ensures that academic study aligns effectively with school-based training.

What students achieve

On successful completion of both Masters-level modules and recommendation for QTS (by the SCITT provider), students will:

  • Gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) awarded by the University of Exeter
  • Complete 60 Masters-level credits, which may contribute towards further postgraduate study
  • Students who are not recommended for QTS by the SCITT provider but pass both Masters-level modules can leave with a PGCert in Professional Studies in Education.

Graduates develop:

  • Strong understanding of educational theory, policy and practice · Advanced pedagogical and curriculum knowledge
  • Skills in critical reflection and evidence-informed teaching

Our partnership model

We work collaboratively with SCITT providers to ensure a coherent student experience.

We provide:

  • Design and delivery of PGCE academic content
  • Teaching, assessment and quality assurance for the 60-credit programme · Access to university learning resources and student support
  • Award of the PGCE qualification
  • Optional graduation ceremony

Our SCITT partner provides:

  • Recruitment and admissions
  • Delivery of QTS curriculum and school placements
  • Pastoral care and day-to-day student support
  • Ofsted and regulatory compliance for ITT provision
