COM1020ZUT: Programming

We use computers in almost all aspects of our daily lives and throughout science, so it is easy to take them for granted. However, so that we can use computers to solve new problems and create new things, we have to be able to program them. This module introduces you to programming and problem-solving with a computer. You will learn how to formulate an algorithm to solve a problem, and you will acquire the skills to write, test and debug programs. The module will also introduce you to object-oriented problem-solving methods and provide you with object-oriented (OO) techniques for the analysis, design and implementation of solutions.

This module is an introductory course in computer programming and will introduce you to the fundamental concepts of computer algorithms and programming, with a strong emphasis on practical implementation. You will also learn how to apply analytical and problem-solving skills to the design and implementation of small applications. Finally, the module will introduce you to the Object-Oriented programming paradigm and its basic design concepts.

MTH1005ZUT: Calculus I

During your degree, you will be solving problems and proving theories in several branches of mathematics, such as pure mathematics, applications to science and engineering, and statistics. Inevitably, you need to be able to calculate. That is what gives mathematics its great power. This module covers developed bodies of useful techniques as a toolkit of common knowledge. It brings emphasis on the techniques rather than the applications of the techniques. Such techniques will enable you to deepen your familiarity with, and generalise, methods that you have seen at the school level of mathematics. This module will study topics that include the geometry of conic sections, functions and their properties, continuity and differentiability, including the Mean Value Theorem and Rolles’ Theorem, differentiation from first principles, Leibniz’ rule for differentiation, limits and convergence of sequences and series, including Power Series and Taylor Series.

MTH1006ZUT: Discrete Mathematics and Probability

Our ability to collect and analyse data is increasingly driving our world. Statistics is concerned with both the practice of analysing data to learn about the world, and the theory that underpins the methods and models used for data collection and analysis. This theory is itself based on probability, the mathematics of chance and uncertainty. In this module, you will learn about the fundamentals of combinatorics and probability and the mathematical properties of random variables and probability distributions, always with a view to how these can be used as building blocks for formulating data models.

The aim of this module is to introduce basic concepts in discrete mathematics and probability. It provides the foundation for learning other topics in statistics and probability, including statistical modelling and inference. The module aims to develop an understanding of how to describe and analyse formal probability concepts, including sample spaces, events, conditional probability, and probability distributions. The emphasis will be on building rigorous problem-solving and on illustrating how discrete methods are applied.

CMM1006ZUT: Perspectives on Digital Media

This module will develop your analytical skills as you engage with communications and digital media narratives from reportage to social media. By reflecting on how these narratives inform constructions of identity and understanding of our social world, we will explore how cultural consumption and production have adapted and transformed in response to digital media. Through the application of relevant theory and by engaging with empirical case studies, you will develop your understanding of differing methods and models of communication and digital media and apply them to a range of contemporary contexts.

This module aims to:

• Explore the historical development of a range of communication and digital media technologies

• Encourage you to consider the potentials and limitations of different forms of communication in their particular socio-historical contexts

• Motivate you to critically analyse the potential of ‘new’ media technologies and the creation of ‘active’ audiences.

COM1021ZUT: Object-Oriented Programming

This module will introduce you to object-oriented problem-solving methods and provide you with object-oriented (OO) techniques for the analysis, design and implementation of solutions. We will introduce you to these concepts, and you will develop skills with a new programming language. By the end of this module, you will be able to apply these skills to design and implement small applications.

The module aims to provide you with a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of object-oriented design concepts, alongside the fundamentals of the Java programming language and general object-oriented design concepts. It will also introduce you to widely used components of the Unified Modelling Language (UML), teach you how to interpret and implement a Java program from these higher-level designs, along with the pair programming approach used in industry.

COM1023ZUT: Data Structures and Algorithms

According to an old formula, Algorithms + Data Structures = Programs. This remains as true today as when it was originally formulated by Niklaus Wirth in 1976, and encapsulates the truism that all computation consists of the manipulation of data by means of systematic procedures. But data comes in many different forms (e.g., numerical, alphabetical, graphical) and only by knowing how it is structured can we specify the procedures – algorithms – for manipulating it to produce desired outcomes.  Thus, the study of data structures and algorithms constitutes an integrated topic, which forms the subject matter of this module. You will be introduced to some of the key concepts in the area, with plenty of examples to illustrate them, and you will be given a chance to demonstrate your understanding by undertaking exercises.

MTH1007ZUT: Linear Algebra

This module provides a fundamental introduction to linear algebra, a core mathematical discipline essential for various applications in pure and applied mathematics, physics, engineering, and computer science. Students will develop a deep understanding of vectors and matrices, including Gaussian elimination, linear transformations, and the computation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. ZUT1001: Multimedia Technology and Application

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental concepts, technologies, and practical applications of modern multimedia. It is designed to provide students with a systematic understanding of the core principles underlying digital media elements—including images, audio, video, and animation - and how these components are integrated to create effective multimedia systems.

The curriculum covers the full spectrum of multimedia technology, from hardware architecture and software tools to data compression standards and file formats. Students will explore the technical underpinnings of multimedia networks and examine the latest advancements shaping the field. By engaging with these topics, students will not only grasp the theoretical foundations but also gain practical insights into the development of multimedia applications.

A central aim of this module is to bridge technical knowledge with real-world practice. Students will develop the ability to select and utilise appropriate authoring tools and techniques to solve domain-specific problems effectively. Furthermore, the course encourages critical reflection on the lifecycle of multimedia technologies—examining how their development, implementation, and evolution impact individual experiences and broader societal practices.

CMM2019ZUT: Communication and Climate Crisis

The climate crisis is the defining issue of our era, threatening the future viability of human life on planet Earth. This module critically explores how the climate crisis is communicated. We will think about the role that the mass media, from the news to disaster movies, play in framing the parameters of climate change debates. Digital communications technologies, from the internet to the smartphone, play a key role in circulating information and images about the climate catastrophe and are often promoted as environmentally friendly solutions. However, they come with their own carbon costs that are frequently overlooked. We will develop critical approaches for thinking about the climate crisis through a range of topics, including media representations of the natural world, the carbon footprint of digital technologies, and fictional and non-fictional stories about environmentalism and celebrity activism.

This module introduces the main research techniques that are employed in researching media texts, institutions, platforms and audiences, both in their contemporary and historical contexts. You are introduced to research practices in different traditions of communications research in qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research.

This module aims to introduce a range of research techniques used in different traditions of communication and digital media studies. Many of these methods are used in professional industry contexts and will be vital skills when you enter the job market. By the conclusion of this module, you will be able to demonstrate a deep understanding of methods in media research; apply critical judgment in the selection of research techniques; and identify an appropriate research method to address a particular research question, problem, or topic.

This module introduces the main research techniques employed in researching media texts, institutions, platforms, and audiences, in their contemporary contexts. This module aims to introduce an advanced range of research techniques used in different traditions of digital media studies, with a focus on qualitative analysis. On completing this module, you will demonstrate a deep understanding of methods in digital media research. You will be able to choose which research methods are most appropriate in developing your own research questions and be fully prepared to begin work on research that may form the basis of your final year projects.

This module invites you to explore the social, cultural, and organisational dimensions of the Internet's development and its impact on contemporary society. You will explore the foundational technologies and protocols, but also the human choices and social forces that have shaped the evolution of digital platforms, news distribution, social media, and artificial intelligence.

The module aims to:

• Provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the foundational technologies and protocols that underlie the Internet, from its inception through to present-day applications and future directions

• Enable you to investigate the transformative impacts of digital platforms on media, communications, and public discourse, highlighting the roles of search algorithms, social media, and AI.

• Equip you with the critical tools to analyse the cultural, social, and political forces that have shaped the Internet and the Web as we know them today.

CMM2023ZUT: Introduction to Game Studies 1

This module introduces you to the foundational ideas of game studies and critical games research and looks at the various ways in which video games can be examined as digital media artefacts. You will acquire key understandings of games and look at the many ways in which scholars of digital media have used games to study broader social phenomena.

You will understand commonalities and differences between games and other modes of new media, and between genres of games. You will build an understanding of game play and dynamics and reflect on the relationship between games, everyday life and other digital media.

This module furthers your understanding of the foundational ideas of game studies and the games industry. You will explore the evolving economics of video and digital games, as digital media artefacts and as economic models. You will develop an advanced understanding of games, game cultures, game technologies and gamification.

By the conclusion of this module, you will be able to examine video games and evaluate them as part of the global gaming industry. You will develop an understanding of how games are engaged with and how they might foster communities or develop skills. You will develop an in-depth understanding of one element of the global gaming industry and reflect on what developing/making a game entails.

COM2029ZUT: Fundamentals of Machine Learning

Unlike traditional software, artificial intelligence software can improve performance upon ingesting increasing quantities of data. This module will introduce you to the core concepts that are needed to understand the field of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. You will learn about the principal paradigms from a theoretical point of view and gain practical experience through a series of workshops. In this module, we will emphasise the notion and importance of data, and you will learn how machines can deal with different types of data sources, ranging from images and text to networks and user preferences.

This module aims to equip you with the fundamental notions to understand and identify the compromises and trade-offs that must be made when using a machine learning approach. It will provide the foundations to understand the principal flavours of machine learning techniques. Emphasis will be placed on how to work effectively with different information sources.

ZUT2002: Computer Animation

This module is a required course for the Digital Media Technology major. By learning the computer animation software 3ds Max, students will learn and master the principles and design methods of 3D animation. The content includes: 3D animation production principles, common operations of 3ds Max, standard geometry and extended geometry modelling, polygon modelling, spline curve modelling, mesh modelling, materials and textures, lights and cameras, particle systems and space distortion objects, as well as rendering effects and post-synthesis. This course emphasises the combination of theory and practical operation, and focuses on cultivating students' animation principles and learning hands-on ability. Students will strengthen their understanding of computer graphics theory and the application of 3D animation. Through the study of this course, students can independently complete the design of basic 3D models and the entire process of computer animation production, and lay an important foundation for the subsequent study of virtual reality and other courses.

Entry requirements for 2027 entry

Students are selected based their scores from the National College Entrance Examination (Gaokao) in China.

The typical offer would be a final average grade of at least 600 out of a total 750, i.e. 80%, and at least 80% for the English subject exam.

The field of digital media technologies is constantly changing – and so are the skills needed to shape it. Through this exciting programme you will develop key mathematical and computing knowledge alongside the essential critical and creative skills needed to understand the complex digital media environments of today, and the possibilities of tomorrow.

You will explore the mathematical, computing, critical and creative skills that underpin current computer gaming, VR/AR/ and FX development, social media and digital media platforms and delivery. 

You'll also develop critical competences in research and innovation in these areas and their contribution to sustainable and socially beneficial growth in a global context.
