Natural Environment Research Council GW4+ Doctoral Training Partnership (NERC GW4+)
The GW4+DTP is a partnership of research-intensive universities across the South West – Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter – each of which has significant research capability in NERC sciences. The partnership offers postgraduates innovative research training in environmental sciences to an excellent standard and attracts the brightest talents to the four universities.
In total 190 PhD studentships are funded by GW4+DTP over a five year period: 37 per annum across the alliance, with the first students starting in September 2014. This means the NERC GW4+DTP offers the greatest number of PhD studentships awarded to any NERC DTP in 2013.
The partnership also includes six research organisations which encompass the full range of NERC science, and include three of the six major NERC research centres:
- British Antarctic Survey
- British Geological Survey
- Centre of Ecology and Hydrology
- Natural History Museum
- Plymouth Marine Laboratory
- Meteorological Office
All research organisation partners have a long-standing commitment to PhD student training, including a history of joint PhD supervision with GW4 universities.
In addition to the university partners, the NERC GW4+DTP brings together a consortium of over 30 research, industrial and third-sector research organisation and associate and partners to deliver innovative training to environmental science PhD students.
All associate partners are stakeholders in enhancing training of PhD students and see the DTP as a vehicle to refining and strengthening that training in response to evolving demands. Associate partners are committed to providing workplace secondments, CASE support for relevant projects and student training opportunities.
