The Leventis Lectures 2015 will showcase the research currently being undertaken at the University of Exeter into the impact of Greek culture upon our modern world. Come along to this evening of research, culture, drinks and networking.

Event details

The College of Humanities is delighted to invite you to join us at this free event in London exploring the impact of Greek culture. Supported by the A.G. Leventis Foundation, the evening is an opportunity to hear Exeter academics draw on new, cutting-edge research to illuminate the impact of Greek culture, both in the ancient world and beyond.

In Search of Lost Tragedy – Professor Matthew Wright

Greek tragedy has long been seen as a major influence on Western literature and drama yet our knowledge is based on a very small selection of material, since nearly all of Greek tragedy is lost. Drawing on his recent research on fragments of lost Greek tragedies, Matthew Wright will give a taste of the wealth of dramatic material from less well-known writers, suggesting that our ideas about tragedy might be very different if more of these works had survived.

Greek food in the Roman kitchen? Examining the impact of Greek food culture on Roman dietary practices – Dr Erica Rowan

Though Greek food is very popular in Western culture today with most of us knowing our Tzatziki from our Taramosalata what isn’t so well understood is its influence on how the Romans ate. Dr Erica Rowan uses new research techniques based on analysis of food remains to show how the Greek diet helped to shape Roman patterns of eating in antiquity.
These talks both open the window on the latest research methods in Classics at Exeter and bring a fresh perspective on the widespread, continuing influence of Greek culture.

The Leventis Initiative, sponsored by the A. G. Leventis Foundation, facilitates research carried out by the University of Exeter into the impact of Greek culture in antiquity and upon the modern world.  Established in May 1979, the A.G. Leventis Foundation is the outcome of the vision of the Cypriot entrepreneur Anastasios G. Leventis (1902-1978), who laid the bases of its focus on society, education and culture.

Now in its fourth decade, the Foundation retains its adherence to these priorities, keenly supporting the dissemination of Greek and Cypriot cultural heritage, as well as extensive public benefits programs, pioneering environmental protection projects, and medical research. Projects include studentships, a lectureship and the ‘Leventis Room’ within the Classics department at the University of Exeter.

Further details, including summaries of each lecture, are available on the downloadable order of service at the bottom of this page.
