“Protecting the Oceans in a Changing World: Why marine biodiversity matters to Hong Kong and the world”

The Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Exeter, Professor Sir Steve Smith, cordially invites you to attend our Global Conversation.

Event details

In this Global Conversation lecture, hear from University of Exeter ecologists, Professor Brendan Godley (Chair in Conservation Science and Director of the Centre for Ecology and Conservation), and Professor Stuart Bearhop, (Chair in Animal Ecology and Associate Dean for International & Development), about their research into marine biodiversity and the importance of protecting our oceans.

Oceans are a critical part of the life support system of our planet. Vital to human wellbeing, oceans provide jobs, feed the world’s growing population and sustain the air we breathe. Our oceans are, however, in trouble. Unsustainable fishing practices are not only destroying habitats and endangering species but the livelihoods and food security of millions of people. Invasive species and acidification from increasing carbon dioxide levels are exerting further impact. We are only just beginning to fathom the possible effects of the disposable plastic products that reach the sea. Positive steps are, however, being made to enhance resilience in the form of improved fishing practices, marine protected areas at a range of scales and the development of marine renewable energy. All of these offer opportunities for dividends for biodiversity, business and coastal people. The discussion will highlight the importance of building resilience to environmental change, the positive impacts of conservation, and how education plays an essential role in the ‘Globally Informed Citizen’ becoming aware of the wider world and their own role within it.

There will be an opportunity to ask your questions directly to a panel of experts, featuring Dr Christine Loh, Undersecretary for the Environment, Hong Kong Government, during a Q&A session.
