Information
All modern societies are now multicultural – and destined to become more so – yet the ideology of multiculturalism cannot mediate the changes which people both enjoy and fear. Multiculturalism no longer enjoys political nor popular support. No politician will be its advocate and at a popular level it invites general cynicism and even derision.
Academic debate has also become limited and predictable, with little by way of empirical evidence, nor any real inter-disciplinary consideration. We need a new way of thinking about how we live together in an increasingly globalised world in which complex and multi-faceted identities are fast becoming the norm. Interculturalism can provide a new and progressive perspective for the future of social relationships – but only if we are prepared to positively respond to the new realities.
Biography
Ted Cantle set up the Institute of Community Cohesion in 2005, and this became the UK’s leading authority on community cohesion and intercultural relations. He has now established the iCoCo Foundation to build on this work and to develop policy and practice on interculturalism and community cohesion.
More recently, Ted has been responsible for developing the idea of ‘interculturalism’ for the new era of globalisation and super-diversity. This is the subject of his new book - Interculturalism: The New Era of Cohesion and Diversity. Ted was awarded the CBE in 2004
