The Revolution of European Cinema in The Sixties: The French New Wave and The New Spanish Cinema

Event details

This seminar is co-hosted by the Centre for Translating Cultures and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Film

In the 1960s, the theory and practice of the production and the reception of film began to change radically. At the end of this process film was constituted as a legitimate art. But what were the “conditions of possibility” (Kant) for this fundamental transformation in the field of cinema? In order to answer this question, the theory, politics, economy, aesthetics and ethics of cinema will be analyzed with a special focus on the cases of France and Spain. It will be demonstrated that, despite very different circumstances, the two movements achieved the same cinematographic revolution.
