Biog & Summary

Daniel van den Hove is an Associate professor at Maastricht University (the Netherlands), as well as at the University of Würzburg (Germany). After having studied Medical Biology at the University of Amsterdam, during his PhD at Maastricht University (2002-2006), he focused on the relationship between prenatal maternal stress and adult psychopathology. His main interest was directed towards the biological mechanisms that may explain the increased prevalence of affective disorders in prenatally stressed individuals. Further, in this respect, he has been investigating the effects of fetal and neonatal antidepressant exposure on offspring development.

Currently, in his role as head of the Neuroepigenetics group at Maastricht University, he is investigating the role of gene x environment interactions, and their underlying epigenetic mechanisms, in the pathophysiology of psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. In addition, presently, he is chairing the Fundamental Neuroscience Section within the School for Mental Health and Neuroscience (MHeNs) at Maastricht University (see https://mhens.mumc.maastrichtuniversity.nl/neuroepigenetics). Since recently, in close collaboration with the University of Exeter, he is also coordinating the European H2020/JPND project EPI-AD (www.EPI-AD.eu) on the role of epigenetic dysregulation in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease. Up to now, he has published >100 scientific papers, while he has been supervising 23 PhD students and has acquired over €3.4 million in funding as a PI. Recently, he has been selected for Maastricht’s TOP-Talent program, preparing him for his full professorship.
