ESRC Doctoral Training Centre +3 and 1+3 Studentships in Economic and Social History Ref: 1082
About the award
The Universities of Bristol, Exeter and Bath have come together to form one of the UK’s largest Centres of postgraduate research training for social scientists in fields ranging from economics and human geography to history and psychology.
The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) has granted doctoral training centre status to the collaboration. The South West Doctoral Training Centre (SWDTC) has been accredited to offer a hub of world-class social sciences research. As one of only 21 Centres in the UK, the SWDTC is part of a national network which was launched in October 2011 that will train a new generation of social scientists. The SWDTC has been allocated 41 studentships per annum and the College of Humanities at the University of Exeter is pleased to be offering up to 2 ESRC 1+3 or +3 studentships in the area of Economic and Social History for 2013/14 entry.
For eligible students the studentship will cover UK/EU tuition fees and an annual maintenance grant (in 2012/13 this was £13,590) for up to three years.
For the 1+3 studentships we will require you to register for the MRes in Economic and Social History (Streatham Campus, Exeter).
For the +3 studentships we will require you to register for the MPhil/PhD History at either our Streatham Campus in Exeter or our Cornwall Campus, near Falmouth.

Entry criteria
For the 1+3 programme students must have a strong first degree (at least an Upper Second Class Honours or equivalent) in a humanities or social science discipline.
Candidates for the +3 programme must, in addition, have (or be about to complete) a Masters degree in a humanities or social science discipline. Please note that International students (non UK/EU students) are not eligible to apply. Candidates who have completed their Masters in an ESRC-accredited programme are especially encouraged to apply.
Awards are available for Streatham (Exeter) or Tremough (Cornwall) campus based study only. Please note that these awards are not available for students wishing to study via distance-learning.
Residency requirements
UK students are eligible to receive a full ESRC studentship; EU students are eligible to receive a fees-only award. If you are unsure of your eligibility, you can check the ESRC eligibility requirements or email humanities-pgadmissions@exeter.ac.uk.
To apply
In order to apply for these studentships you will need to complete an online web form where you must submit some personal details and upload:
• a full CV.
• a covering letter (outlining your academic interests, prior research experience and reasons for wishing to undertake a research project at Exeter).
• A research proposal of 1-2,000 words in length.
• A transcript (or interim transcript if you are still studying) of your previous degree results.
• An IELTS/TOEFL certificate (where applicable).
• Details of two academic referees.
In addition you must also ensure that your referees email their references to the Postgraduate Administrator at humanities-pgadmissions@exeter.ac.uk by 14 February 2013.
Guidelines on submitting references to us can be found on our dedicated page, where you can also download a copy of our institutional reference form for your referees to complete and return to us, or for them to use as a guide.
Please note that if you have already submitted references to support your application to one of our MPhil/PhD programmes you may re-use these to support your funding application. However, this is not automatic and you must email us at humanities-pgadmissions@exeter.ac.uk to confirm that we have two references on file to support your application, and to request that they be used to support your funding application.
All application documents must be submitted in English. Certified translated copies of academic qualifications must also be provided.
