ESRC Doctoral Training Centre +3 and 1+3 Studentships in Environment, Energy and Resilience Ref: 1095
About the award
We are inviting applications for ESRC 1+3 or +3 studentships as part of the Environment, Energy and Resilience interdisciplinary pathway of the South West Doctoral Training Centre (SWDTC) for entry in 2013/14. All students in on Environment, Energy and Resilience will have two supervisors from different disciplinary perspectives and different institutions. Up to two studentships will be awarded in this pathway across the SWDTC on a competitive basis.
Environment, Energy and Resilience
This pathway explores the interface between security, energy and environment by engaging the latest critical thinking on risk management, critical infrastructure, public regulation, policy studies and the environmental sciences. It will train social science researchers who understand the impacts of living with global environmental change, the uncertainties of environmental change for water, energy and food security, and the diverse responses needed to foster behaviours, practices and policies that promote sustainability and resilience. This pathway directly addresses the ESRC’s 2009 – 2014 Environment, Energy and Resilience, and Security, Conflict and Justice initiatives, and fits with ESRC’s involvement in the RCUK Living with Environmental Change and Energy Research programmes.
There are a range of relevant disciplines at Exeter including:
- Law
- Centre for Energy and the Environment
- Centre for Rural Policy Research
- Climate Change and Sustainable Futures research theme
All students on the Environment, Energy and Resilience interdisciplinary pathway will have two supervisors from different disciplinary perspectives and different institutions (Universities of Exeter, Bath or Bristol). You should apply to the University of Exeter if your lead supervisor is based at the University of Exeter. We recommend that you contact the pathway lead at the University of Exeter, Dr Shane Fudge, s.fudge@exeter.ac.uk with a brief description of your proposed topic (no more than 1 page). Dr Fudge may be able to put you in touch with potential supervisor(s) for your topic but you should also do your own research on this.
Academic entry requirements:
For the 1+3 programme candidates must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in a social science discipline. Candidates for the +3 programme must, in addition, have (or expect to complete by September 2013) a Masters degree in a social science discipline with appropriate research training.
For the 1+3 studentship you would register for the MRes Environment, Energy and Resilience (Cornwall Campus) in year 1, followed by the MPhil/PhD Environment, Energy and Resilience at the Streatham Campus, Exeter or the Cornwall Campus, near Falmouth depending on the location of your lead supervisor. For the +3 studentship you would register for the MPhil/PhD Environment, Energy and Resilience at the Streatham Campus, Exeter or the Cornwall Campus, near Falmouth depending on the location of your lead supervisor.
Value of award and residency entry requirements:
The studentship will cover a stipend at the standard Research Council rate (currently £13,590 per annum for 2012-2013), a contribution towards research costs and tuition fees at the UK/EU rate for students who meet the residency requirements outlined by the ESRC (see http://www.esrc.ac.uk/funding-and-guidance/funding-opportunities/looking-for-funding/eligibility.aspx) for up to three years for +3 candidates, and up to four years for 1+3 candidates. Students from EU countries who do not meet the residency requirements may still be eligible for a fees-only award.
