ESRC Doctoral Training Centre “+3” PhD Studentship in Socio-Legal Studies
About the award
The College of Social Sciences and International Studies at the University of Exeter is pleased to be offering a “+3” PhD studentship in Socio-Legal Studies as part of the South West Doctoral Training Centre. Applicants must already have completed an eligible ESRC recognised Masters Research Training programme or equivalent in order to be considered.
Law at Exeter is committed to excellence in research, and individual scholars work in a wide range of fields from the historical and theoretical to the socio-legal. We have a vigorous research culture within the Law School which is contributed to by a flourishing community of full- and part-time postgraduate research students and enhanced by our location within the College of Social Sciences and International Studies.
For eligible students the full time studentship will cover UK/EU fees and an annual Research Council maintenance grant of approximately £13,590 (2012/2013 rate) for up to three years (+3 award).
The studentship is open to both full-time and part-time students from the UK/EU who plan to study for a Law programme from April 2013. For part-time students the payments will be on a pro-rata basis.
The award will only be made to those applicants who go on to enrol with the Law School in April 2013. Awards are payable in instalments on enrolment and continued payment of the studentship is subject to satisfactory annual progression.
Academic entry requirements: Candidates must have a strong first degree (at least an Upper Second Class Honours or equivalent) in a relevant social science discipline. In addition, candidates must have (or be about to complete) a Masters degree in a relevant social science discipline or have equivalent research training. The PhD project must take a socio-legal approach, and can be within any of the areas where the Exeter Law School has expertise. Personal qualities should also include the ability to work independently and high degree of motivation necessary to complete a PhD in three years.
Residency entry requirements: Home status students receive a full ESRC studentship (fees plus a maintenance grant of approximately £13,998 per year); EU students who have not been resident in the UK for the last three years before the start of their studentship are eligible for a fees-only award. If you are unsure of your eligibility, you can check the ESRC eligibility requirements in Annexe 1 of the ESRC Postgraduate Funding Guide.
Only candidates who also hold an offer for a place of study on one of the College’s PhD or Master's programmes as specified above will be considered, so an application must be submitted before or concurrent with the scholarship application.
