East Asia
At the University of Exeter, we are proud to work closely with a diverse range of key partners across East Asia, delivering innovative teaching and research opportunities.
In China, this includes our strategic partnership with the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) through which we’ve established the Environmental Sustainability and Resilience (ENSURE) Joint Centre, supporting impactful research collaborations that address key SDGs and global climate challenges. In partnership with Tsinghua University, Exeter are delivering the Digital Archive of the Middle East (DAME) project, through which we have established a joint chairmanship, regular research placements and Split Site PhD opportunities.
We also launched the Exeter-Tsinghua Institute for Global Humanities in 2025, through which we co-deliver a range of activities from workshops, exhibitions and opportunities for collaborative research and exchange.

We work closely with Fudan University, in part through our joint Global Thought Network, facilitating cross-cultural exchange, seminars and projects in the humanities and social sciences – we also offer Academic Fellowship opportunities with each of Tsinghua and Fudan, facilitating placements between Exeter and our partners to explore and take forward joint research. Exeter is also a leading member of the UK China Humanities Alliance (UKCHA), an 18-strong network of humanities, social science and area studies experts – through UKCHA, Exeter serves as the coordinating institution for the UK membership, in association with Tsinghua University as the Alliance’s Secretariat.
We are also building a strong and growing research collaboration with City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) focussed on research in Brain Science and allied fields, supporting faculty mobility and joint, interdisciplinary research initiatives in this critical health science.
Further to this, we are pleased to maintain a range of important education partnerships with institutions across the country, including with the Chinese University of Political Science and Law, Guangdong University of Finance and Economics, Guangdong University of Technology, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Nanjing Normal University, Shaanxi Normal University, Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Soochow University, Taiyuan University of Technology, the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Wuhan University and Zhejiang University of Technology, and also with Musashino University in Japan. We are taking forward new opportunities to add to this rich portfolio, so please return to this page for news and updates on our collaborations in the East Asia region.
