On the day – Cornwall

Your graduation day is a special occasion to celebrate your academic achievements at the University of Exeter with your friends and family. Visit our graduation preparation page to plan and prepare for your graduation. The information listed below explains all you need to know about your graduation day.

Further information about what to expect on the day is available in Cornwall - Information for Graduands and Guests 2019

All graduands will need to wear full academic dress on the day of graduation. To book your robes please see our information on booking your robes. You will need to collect your robes from the Yellow Seminar Room in the Exchange Building where representatives of the University's robe makers will be in attendance. You will also be required to wear smart clothes and are advised not to wear jeans or trainers. Please wear appropriate footwear for walking up and down the stage steps.

It is helpful to bring one or two safety pins to secure your hood (a buttoned shirt or blouse would enable you to hook on the hood), and women may wish to use hair-grips to secure their caps.

Guests are advised to dress as if they are going to a formal occasion.

Tickets will be emailed to Graduands on 5th July 2019

  • Please remember to bring your printed graduand and guest tickets with you to the ceremony.
  • If you do forget to bring your tickets, please come to the Graduation Information Desk in The Exchange building where we can print them for you if necessary.
  • If you have any spare guest tickets that you are unable to use on the day, please bring them to the ticket sales desk in the Exchange Building.
  • If there are any spare tickets available for each ceremony these will be sold on the day from the Ticket Sales desk in The Exchange building.

Dress code

Guests are advised to dress as if they are going to a formal occasion.

Photography during the ceremony

Photographs and videos are permitted, but we kindly ask you not to leave your seat during the ceremony. Please turn off any flash on your camera as this can be distracting for all those on stage, including graduands crossing the stage. We do have professional photographers and videographers capturing the special day.

We do not recommend that children are taken to the ceremony, due to the length and formal nature of proceedings. If your child becomes restless during the ceremony, it would be a kindness to others to take him/her from the venue as quickly and quietly as possible. Ushers will be on hand to assist if necessary. Please note that children are not permitted to cross the stage with their parents. Any child over the age of two will also require a separate guest ticket to attend.

Commemorative programmes

Commemorative programmes will be on sale for £5.00 from the Information Desk at the Cathedral. All graduands receive a complementary programme during their ceremony.

Your seat

Graduands and guests are asked to arrive at the Cathedral and be seated 30 minutes before each ceremony begins. Click here to check ceremony times.

Seats for guests are unreserved with the exception of those with specific requirements, who will have reserved seats (please see ‘Disabled access information’ below for further details).

During the ceremony

At the beginning and end of the ceremony, please stand for the entry and exit of the processions. We ask that you remain seated throughout the ceremony in order to not disrupt the flow of the ceremony. At the end of the ceremony please remain in the Cathedral until after the exit of the graduates' procession.

Our official photographers, H Tempest Ltd, will be in on campus on the day of your ceremony, offering a professional photography service on the top floor of the Exchange Building in the Red, Blue and Green seminar rooms.

They will be operating multiple studios on graduation day.  These will be open from the time gowns are given out in the morning until an hour after the last ceremony. You can visit them before or after your ceremony and at any time during the day, though to avoid large queues we recommend you visit before your ceremony.

You do not order in advance of the ceremonies - instant proofs will be given to you in the studio when your photographs are taken, enabling you to select your favourites and to place your order either at the sales desk or afterwards via the website or by post / telephone.  All packs ordered on the day will receive free wallet and mini prints with your order.

Tempest offers an extensive range of products which are available to view in advance online at:

Presentation and Group Photographs

Tempest Photography will also be on hand to capture the moment you cross the stage and are awarded your degree.  These images will be available to view immediately after your ceremony and prints can be purchased to take away on the day.

Alternatively visit, allowing 7 days after your event to order your Presentation Photograph.

Tempest will also be taking group photographs after each ceremony. These photographs will be available to view and order from the sales desk on the Top Floor of The Exchange building.

Disabled Parking in Truro

There is limited opportunity for parking close to the cathedral so please make sure that you leave plenty of time to find a suitable location. Whilst parking locally may be difficult it is possible to drop off passengers at the front of the Cathedral and then park in the multi storey car park about 10 minute walk from the Cathedral.

The graduation ceremonies will be held at:

Truro Cathedral,
14 St Mary's Street

Please use the following link for directions to the University of Exeter's Penryn campus

Due to the lack of parking in Truro it is strongly advised that you use the free park and ride service that is offered to all graduands and guests between the Penryn Campus and the Cathedral (further details below).

Parking will be available at the Penryn Campus and is free of charge on Graduation Day. It is best to allow ample time to park and board the coaches for Truro Cathedral.

If you are intending to park in Truro, please be aware that parking is very limited and you should therefore allow extra time to find a parking space and reach the Cathedral. The closest car park to the Cathedral is the Highcross NCP car park on St Clements Road. Truro also has an excellent Park and Ride service

Please note that there is no parking available at the Cathedral, and if you have decided to make your own way to the Cathedral you will need to collect your robes from Penryn campus beforehand.
