Events and support for international students

Studying is just part of your university experience. There are a number of ways to make the most of your time in the UK, meet local people and get to know your new home.

More ways to get involved

Languages Cafe

The Languages Cafe provides a friendly environment for informal conversation group for language speakers and enthusiasts of all levels. Open to all colleagues, PGRs and other University of Exeter students as well as members of the public.

Practice your French, Spanish, Italian, English, Arabic, Mandarin, British Sign Language, Russian, Japanese, and Portuguese. This free cafe is open to all colleagues, students, and the public. No sign up is required and tea and coffee will be provided.

Volunteer your time

Volunteering is a great way to boost your CV, develop skills, gain experience, make contacts and give something back. Don't forget that most voluntary work counts towards the Exeter Award.

Stay with a British family

HOST visits are a fantastic way of spending a weekend with a British family and experiencing British culture for yourself outside the University.

The visit itself is free, but you will be required to pay an application fee of £60.

Explore what's on offer from the Multifaith Chaplaincy

Many events at the Multifaith Chaplaincy in Exeter take place throughout the year, including the Connections Café. The Cornwall Multifaith Chaplaincy is a warm and friendly space that is here for everyone, whether you have a faith or not.

Connections Café

The café is hosted twice a week during term time by members of the Multifaith Chaplaincy team. It's open to all of our students and staff, and provides a chance to chat with friends and meet new people in a relaxed space. Some of the Chaplains will also be there if there's anything you would like to talk to someone about.

You can drop in at any time, for as little or long as you like. Free hot drinks, sweet snacks and treats are provided, and there are often craft or mindfulness activities to take part in if you wish.

The café is free, and everyone from the University, of any faith or world view, is warmly invited and very welcome.

  • Streatham Campus: Every Tuesday during term time, in the Sarah Turvill Multifaith Centre, 12.00pm-2.00pm.
  • St Luke's Campus: Every Thursday during term time, in St Luke's Chapel, 12.30pm-2.00pm.

Cultural festivals

We host a number of cultural events across our campuses, often open to local residents too.

The University, in collaboration with Student's Guild societies, supports a number of cultural events on our Exeter campuses throughout the year. We support groups of students who wish to celebrate national, cultural or religious events across campus. In previous years we have helped students to celebrate Diwali, Thanksgiving, and Lunar New Year. All events are open to students and staff, and some events are open to the public where noted.

There is also plenty organised on Penryn Campus, so we advise you check out the FXPlus 'What's On' calendar to see all events organised across campus.

If you’d like support with planning and celebrating an event; we are happy to support groups of students who wish to celebrate national, cultural or religious events across campus. In previous years we have helped students to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival, Diwali, Chinese New Year & Norwegian Constitution Day.
