Lost or stolen passports

If your passport has been lost or stolen, here are the steps you should follow:

1. Report the loss or theft.

Keep evidence that you have done this such as a reference number, police report letter, or email confirmation.

  • If you are outside the UK: report the loss or theft to the local police.
  • If you are in the UK: report the loss online and theft at the local police station.

2. Get a replacement passport

From the nearest embassy for your country. Check your own government's website for details of the nearest office and how to apply.

3. Inform UK Visas and Immigration of your new passport details

If you have an eVisa: sign into your UKVI account, go to Personal Details, then 'add new identity document' and follow the instructions. You must do this before you travel. If you are unable to do this, you will need to transfer your visa to the new passport.

If you only have a visa as a sticker in your passport (vignette):

4. Inform the University

Email a photo or scan of your new passport to immigrationcompliance@exeter.ac.uk

If you're unsure of your situation, contact us and we will give you individual advice depending on your particular circumstances.

Lost or stolen BRP cards

The BRP card system ended in December 2024, but you still have to report the loss or theft of your BRP card.

Since 01 January 2025, you need to prove your immigration status online using a share code and not a BRP card. Make sure you have created your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account and can access your eVisa.

If you have lost your BRP card you should first make sure that you have checked everywhere it could possibly be. This means:

  • Contacting the venue or location you were in when you last had it.
  • If you lost it on campus, check the lost property of  Estate Patrol (Northcote House) or at the Info Point desk in the Peter Lanyon Building if you are a Cornwall student
  • Contact the local police station as it may have been handed in there.

If you still cannot find your BRP card, you need to report the loss or theft of your BRP card to UK Visas and Immigration using the online form. You will not receive a replacement.
