Resources and support for career mentors

Mentor support

Every mentor is sent the Career Mentor Guide via email, before the scheme starts. This contains useful resources and a step-by-step guide to help you navigate your mentor-mentee partnership.

Throughout your time mentoring with us, you'll also receive regular communications from the Mentoring Team to check on progress and offer support.

All mentors are encouraged to contact a member of the team if they have any questions or encounter any problems, by emailing careermentorscheme@exeter.ac.uk. You may also find answers on our frequently asked questions page.

How to support your mentee's objectives

When mentees sign up to the Career Mentor Scheme, we ask them to select the objectives they would like to achieve by the end of their six months. Listed below are links to resources to help you support your mentee in achieving their chosen objectives.

Frequently asked questions

What if my mentee isn't what I expected?

We aim to match mentors with mentees who are looking to gain insight into the mentor's sector. Occasionally mentees may come across as timid on first impressions and it's understandable that they may be overwhelmed or slightly worried by meeting an experienced professional for the first time. Please be patient and give them the chance to get to know you and for you to get to know them.

We provide guidelines in a support guide, available to both mentor and mentee, to help you structure your initial meeting and remove any doubts about what to discuss.

If you feel that the match is not appropriate please contact a member of the team.

If you have a question that isn't covered on this page, please email us at careermentorscheme@exeter.ac.uk.

How can I help my mentee get work experience?

The University of Exeter promotes paid work experience, in line with National Minimum Wage regulations. If you require more advice, please email our internships team.

How can I re-engage with my mentee?

By participating in this scheme, all mentees agree to maintain regular contact with their mentor. The level of contact expected is a minimum of at least once per month via email or telephone. Please be patient with your mentee, as there will be periods when they are very busy with coursework or exams and may not be in contact, however they should inform you when these busy periods are coming up.

If you have not heard from your mentee in a long time, please contact a member of the team by emailing careermentorscheme@exeter.ac.uk.
