A2i Student Widening Participation (WP) Funding
This funding supports underrepresented University of Exeter students who meet the Widening Participation (WP) Criteria, by helping their chosen UK-based employer cover 80 or 140 hours of paid internship work.
Who can receive funding?
Employer subsidies are available to:
- SMEs and start-ups
- Registered charities
- Statutory organisations (e.g. schools, colleges, councils)
- University of Exeter academics and departments

Key info:
- Funding is limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis
- Each employer can receive up to two allocations per academic year
- Students must be added to your payroll system (or Paid Time if employed by the University)
Eligible students are encouraged to approach employers to arrange their own paid internship. If however, you have already appointed an intern, with their permission the team will be able to check if they meet the criteria and potentially award funding.
This is truly a win-win scheme. The A2i programme allows employers to provide a space and an experience for a student who is about to enter the work force, and at the same time the scheme supports the employer in every way - allowing it to experience the benefits of opening junior roles within the organisation

The A2i scheme was an outstanding initiative that provided essential support to conservation projects through funded internships.
At Wildwood Devon, having access to a funded intern was incredibly valuable, allowing us to advance critical conservation work while offering meaningful, hands-on experience to emerging professionals in the field.
