Our partnerships

The CANIE Accord

In April 2024 the Global Opportunities Team became the first Russell Group University to sign the CANIE Accord.

CANIE - Climate Action Network for International Educators - is an organisation that drives change in the international education sector to foster sustainable practices and climate action.

The University of Exeter is uniquely well-positioned to deliver on the Accord’s ambitions. We are guided by a robust sustainability strategy, powered by world-leading climate research, and recognised with a top 30 global ranking in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. Exeter also leads across multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals. At our Penryn Campus in Cornwall, environmental and social sustainability are embedded across all aspects of campus life and learning.

The Global Opportunities team is actively working to fulfil our CANIE commitments. Our Sustainability Working Group takes a holistic approach to embedding sustainability into mobility practices, team culture and programme design. We share best practice through the Universities UK International Outward Mobility Network, integrate sustainability into team development, and prioritise ways to sustain and grow exchange partnerships with a strong environmental focus.

We are proud of the progress so far - but we also recognise that there is more to do. Our commitment to CANIE is both a responsibility and an opportunity: to lead by example, to collaborate across the sector, and to ensure that international education can thrive in a more sustainable future.
